My World: Tubac

Under the fading light of December skies we drove to Tubac on Saturday, December 6. It is my Mother's first day here and we drive her to Rio Rico to see Hawk Hill before stopping by Tubac for dinner. We had no idea it was Luminaria Nights but as we pass trough the archway that frames the entrance to the Tubac Embarcadero we see the sidewalks lined with paper sacs waiting for their candles to be lighted.

Tubac is a small town south of Tucson that enjoys a growing reputation as an artist colony. The little town is a winter escape for many snowbirds as well as a year-round residence for retirees. Today the sidewalks are guarded by nutcracker soldiers.

My mother poses with them for fun.

Christmas lights stream across courtyards, and wind around pillars and posts.

Mom and I sit on a sculptured bench...

...while Gus is greeted by Santa Claus.

Our growling stomachs call to us. We find a pleasant place to dine at the Tubac Deli and Coffee Company. Pizza is our choice for tonight. We find a table outside under the lighted patio with strains of Christmas carols wafting through the evening air...

...and luminaria lined walkways waiting for flame...

...while fountains sing their own songs...

...and sculptured minstrels play...

...and a head is bowed in peaceful prayer.

Tubac is a wonderful place to visit with many restaurants and art galleries. I have only started to explore this wonderful part of My World.

To continue your tour around the globe, please visit

If I get back to Tucson, and I hope I will some day, this will definitely be on my list. Looks like you had a great day.

Wren, we did. And if you like art or history, this is the place for you. There is also very good birding nearby.

I could use a good dose of desert living right around now. Interestingly, here in south Florida, our nights don't get as cold as Phoenix, but our summer's rarely break 95 F ... not counting the humidity.

Robert, my brother, who lives in Cape Coral, is always pointing that out to me. He loves it there, and I love it here! I hope you can come back someday!

What a festive southwestern stroll, so full of cultural tradition. I love the first photograph and of course the lights and waiting candles.

Oh Kathie, your desert posts are so delightful as I shiver. I was just reading about sandhill cranes and thinking about your post on them last Spring. Enjoy your visit with your mom.

The photography in this post is outstanding. For some reason the picture of Gus with Santa made me chuckle. Tubac is yet another place that I've driven past a ton of times and never taken the time to visit. I'll have to change that.

I always enjoy seeing a warmer locale decorated for Christmas, though, without snow and winter jackets, I would feel funny.

Thinking of you sitting at a table outside...while we wait for a snowstorm heading right for the midwest!

You and your Mom look so happy- Gus and Santa too! Enjoy your visit.

I've not heard of Tubac before. I'll have to put that on my list to visit next time I'm in that area. It looks like your mom is enjoying her visit with you and Gus. I had to chuckle when you mentioned that all of you had dinner outdoors. Gosh, it's been too cold around here (northern CA) to consider eating dinner outdoors. Lunch, maybe, but definitely not dinner! ;o)
