Do I wish I had a picture of a Nighthawk? You bet. But have you ever tried to take one? They dart erratically in the low light of dusk chasing insects, so, a sunset is the best I can do for now. Believe it or not, this is part of the same sunset as last week's photo. It was a good night for Skywatch photos! To view other Skywatch Friday photos visit our host,Tom Wigley at Wiggers World.

I think you have to catch a crazy,mixed up night hawk who appears during the day. That happened to me when I unexpectedly caught a night heron in the morning light.
I know what you are talking about when it comes to Night Hawks. I did see them perched and sitting perfectly still about 20 years ago. I used to watch them in the early evening. They were like roosting in this large evespout on this barn and sort of laid down in it and when the time came they would stand up and take off and fly away.
They also dive and make a noise that if you hear once you will not forget it. The sound to me is like they are just flying for the joy of flying and diving. It is like they are showing their appreciation for being able to fly and dive and make the sounds they make. I love them. And since yuo mentioned it I will do my best to get some pictures.

Beautiful! Clouds and light and sky are my personal favorite photography subjects so I love this photo.

For nighthawks:
Aperture Priority and use about f4.
Use ISO 1000 or higher.
Manual focus.
Take lots of shots.
Film is cheap. ;o)
You can adjust the levels in photoshop if you have it, or send it to me and I will remove the noise and make any necessary adjustments. I have a high speed cable modem.

Terrific shot of the sunset. I have never tried to shoot a nighthawk. Sounds hard.

Back home in Mississippi folks called those diving little night birds "Bull Bats". I venture a guess they were the same bird you attempted to photograph. Nighthawks and Big Foot are two of the most difficult creatures on Earth to get clearly on film/digital image. :)

Abe, I did go to that webpage and what a beautiful shot! I love these cryptic birds! I have taken photos of them perched during the day but that was with my Coolpix and the photos are stored on my former camera!
