Skywatch Friday: Nighthawk

(Photo taken May 6, 2008 at 6:45 p.m. MST by Kathie with a Nikon D80)

Do I wish I had a picture of a Nighthawk? You bet. But have you ever tried to take one? They dart erratically in the low light of dusk chasing insects, so, a sunset is the best I can do for now. Believe it or not, this is part of the same sunset as last week's photo. It was a good night for Skywatch photos! To view other Skywatch Friday photos visit our host,Tom Wigley at Wiggers World.

And a vry beautiful picture it is. The colors are wonderful.

I think you have to catch a crazy, mixed up night hawk who appears during the day. That happened to me when I unexpectedly caught a night heron in the morning light.

I know what you are talking about when it comes to Night Hawks. I did see them perched and sitting perfectly still about 20 years ago. I used to watch them in the early evening. They were like roosting in this large evespout on this barn and sort of laid down in it and when the time came they would stand up and take off and fly away.

They also dive and make a noise that if you hear once you will not forget it. The sound to me is like they are just flying for the joy of flying and diving. It is like they are showing their appreciation for being able to fly and dive and make the sounds they make. I love them. And since yuo mentioned it I will do my best to get some pictures.

I do like yur photograph. Stunning.

I found some pictures on google and on yahoo by just typing in the name nighthawk.

On flickr I found a good example in this photo

Try it and see if you like the picture of the nighthawk perched on the old rusty barb wire.

You know, you are one of my favorite reads. I like the detailed walks. This photo is stunning. Great SWF.

For nighthawks:
Aperture Priority and use about f4.
Use ISO 1000 or higher.
Manual focus.
Take lots of shots.
Film is cheap. ;o)

You can adjust the levels in photoshop if you have it, or send it to me and I will remove the noise and make any necessary adjustments. I have a high speed cable modem.

Thanks for the visit,
Troy

I only noticed (sorry) the fantastic way you refer to your husband on this blog ... I sure do hope my marriage reaches that nice age ... almost there ... 17 now :)

I'm enjoying it again! Just beautiful. Nighthawks have the most lonely cry... well I think they do anyway! *smile*

So right! Any bird taken at sunset tends to be merely a silhouette! The colours in your image are amazing ... great blog too :)

Followed your link for skywatch friday, fantastic photos you are sharing with everyone.

Back home in Mississippi folks called those diving little night birds "Bull Bats". I venture a guess they were the same bird you attempted to photograph. Nighthawks and Big Foot are two of the most difficult creatures on Earth to get clearly on film/digital image. :)

Beautiful 'skywatch' photo. Don't we all wish for a shot of some unseen or hard to get bird? Mine would be bluebirds which I can't get in my yard!! Ienjoyed the poem 'Nighthawk'

Bobbie, thank you! Look at my next post to see what Gus did!

Abe, I did go to that webpage and what a beautiful shot! I love these cryptic birds! I have taken photos of them perched during the day but that was with my Coolpix and the photos are stored on my former camera!

Ann, thanks for visiting. You have a very nice blog also.

Troy, Thanks for all your help. Come see the results of Gus' attempt last night.
