Last Thursday I took a walk with some new birding friends in Sycamore Canyon where we found several of these preying mantis egg cases suspended like a promise from numerous twigs. The early morning sun made them shine like gold and I love the way it looks against the bright blue sky. For more sky views click on the button below.

We see a few praying mantis here in the late summer so they must lay eggs in the north as well. Very pretty colours. I will have to remember to look for them.
That's really cool! I've never seen a mantis egg case.
That mantis egg case does look stunning against the blue sky! Kind of reminds me of a honey comb.
This is something I have never seen before. Thanks Kathie, there is a lot of beauty in nature.
Beautiful shot! I wish I saw more preying mantises around here!
What a great shot! I must admit, I never knew waht a praying mantis egg case gooked like. thank you.
Really gorgeous jewel colors!
What a keen eye you have! I have never noticed one before, and really had no clue what they looked like. Thank you for teaching me. Love the amazing blue color in your shot!
I've probably seen these and never knew what they were. You're right, this one is very striking against that crystal blue sky. Great shot!
Fascinating! I've never before seen a mantis egg case. Thanks! Great photo.
P.S. I should have looked at your 2/2/09 post! :) I'm putting you in my feeds!
That is something. Thanks for showing this to us. Never seen one before. Wow.
That is so cool, never saw those before. We occasionally see them around here. Last summer I had a small one crawling up my leg and almost smooshed it because I thought it was a spider. But I gently put him in my grasses. Now I know what to look for in the future.
Pat-an Akansas stamper, thank you! And your comment made me remember I wanted to put in a link to that post.
A great shot! Happy skywatch.
Excellent skywatch shot, very unique and that is what I like most about your work.
Cheers!

I hvae never seen this before, but the colors are great together :)
The egg case does look like a promise. The color is indeed pretty against your bright blue sky.
A very interesting photo, Kathie. Thanks for stopping by my blog - nice to meet you too! It's nice to see a bird blog from the west. Looks like you have lots of beautiful birds that I can only dream about from here in Ohio!
Interesting, indeed, and makes a very different skywatch as well. Plus, you'll have baby praying mantises to look forward to.
These are cool! I've never seen one before, but now I will know what they look like. Do they favor a certain type of tree or bush?
Who'd a thunk? Wow. That looks like some kind of melon. Amazing, Kathie. Thanks. Our world is chock full of wonder.
Wow. Great photo, orange against blue, but also a great find in nature.
Never seen those before - how interesting the pattern is.
The orange glow against the blue is beautiful.
Very cool photo. Happy SWF!
How cool, lots of interesting structure and form about their nest building. Thanks for sharing with sky watch friday.
