Birding From Dawn ‘till Dusk: Day 1

DSC_0057

Great-horned Owl chicks 4-7-10

Kathryn arrived around 10 a.m. and it wasn’t long before we were out the door birding. Besides the birds in my yard, I drove her around Corona de Tucson where we saw these baby owls. Farther south on Houghton Road we also counted birds. We saw our first Ash-throated flycatcher for the year at the base of Mt. Fagan.

These are the birds we saw on the first day:

  1. Gambel’s Quail
  2. Turkey vulture
  3. Great-horned owl
  4. Mourning Dove
  5. White-winged dove
  6. Broad-billed Hummingbird
  7. Gila woodpecker
  8. Gilded flicker
  9. Ash-throated Flycatcher
  10. Cactus wren
  11. Curve-billed Thrasher
  12. Green-tailed Towhee
  13. Black-throated sparrow
  14. Rufous-winged sparrow
  15. White-crowned sparrow
  16. Northern Cardinal
  17. Pyrrhuloxia
  18. House Finch
  19. Lesser goldfinch
  20. House sparrow
  21. Canyon Wren (heard only)
  22. Swallow sp.
  23. Hawk sp.

Those owl chicks are so adorable. Didn't you find a nest last year too? You are a great birder. Next winter I'm coming down for sure.

elleninmind, sometimes I am overwhelmed by all the birds we have!

Carolyn Ford, glad I made you so happy!

Gaelyn, yes, this is the same owl nest as last year but I fear too many people now know about it. I saw someone esle taking photos there recently. I always stay in my car but apparently others do not. I hope they don't disturb the nest and drive the parents away!

Thanks Denise!
