Great-horned Owl chicks 4-7-10
Kathryn arrived around 10 a.m. and it wasn’t long before we were out the door birding. Besides the birds in my yard, I drove her around Corona de Tucson where we saw these baby owls. Farther south on Houghton Road we also counted birds. We saw our first Ash-throated flycatcher for the year at the base of Mt. Fagan.
These are the birds we saw on the first day:
- Gambel’s Quail
- Turkey vulture
- Great-horned owl
- Mourning Dove
- White-winged dove
- Broad-billed Hummingbird
- Gila woodpecker
- Gilded flicker
- Ash-throated Flycatcher
- Cactus wren
- Curve-billed Thrasher
- Green-tailed Towhee
- Black-throated sparrow
- Rufous-winged sparrow
- White-crowned sparrow
- Northern Cardinal
- Pyrrhuloxia
- House Finch
- Lesser goldfinch
- House sparrow
- Canyon Wren (heard only)
- Swallow sp.
- Hawk sp.

Kathie, great post and birding list. You live in a great area for birding. I love the Owl chicks, they are jsut adorable. Wonderful sighting.
That is an incredible photograph of the owl chicks! Ohhh, I love this!
Those owl chicks are so adorable. Didn't you find a nest last year too? You are a great birder. Next winter I'm coming down for sure.
The owl chicks are fantastic Kathie. Great birding list.
elleninmind, sometimes I am overwhelmed by all the birds we have!
Carolyn Ford, glad I made you so happy!
Gaelyn, yes, this is the same owl nest as last year but I fear too many people now know about it. I saw someone esle taking photos there recently. I always stay in my car but apparently others do not. I hope they don't disturb the nest and drive the parents away!
Thanks Denise!
The owls are so cute! I hope I have the chance to see some chicks myself sometime!
dragonflywoman, there are just too cute!
So are those the chicks from the nest we saw with you? soooooooooo cute
Dawn, yes, they are. I bet they are close to being fledged by now. I will have to go and check!
