My World: Sabino Canyon

It's My World Tuesday and, No, I am not hiding in a cave, I am out voting!

This picture was taken on September 14, 2008 on our monthly bird survey of Sabino Canyon for Tucson Audubon's Important Bird Areas Survey program. As a volunteer I usually have to get up 2 hours before sunrise in order to be on time, since Sabino Canyon is an hour north of where I live. It's always hard to get up early but I'm always glad once I'm there. Sabino Canyon is a magnificent place and one of these days I'm going to go farther than the mile and a half we hike in to do our survey! Even in that short distance the scenery is spectacular!

Scroll down or click on The Birds of Sabino Canyon to see some of the birds we have recorded there in the last two surveys.

Hi Kathie
I can hear the strains of "A Fistful of Dollars" theme music already.

Great image of a rugged landscape!
The previous bird's also deserve a mention! Something at least like a "WOW!!!"
Cheers, Klaus

Very nice. I love Saguaro's. We may have them somewhere in NM, but not anywhere I've been. I love going to AZ and seeing them.

Looking forward to when you go farther!

And love your lizard below!

You are an inspiration to a lot of people. And to think that I once worked at Levy's of Tucson.

That is a tough way to get out and count the birds and many of yours are different from mine here near Buffalo NY...

Great capture, Kathie. You have composed the shot well to catch a lot details. The shadows add to the effect!

I don't think I got there in my last trip to AZ. I know now that it needs to be on my list for the next visit.

I love Sabino Canyon! My sister lives very close to it and we always go there when we visit her. It's a beautiful place and I always see such neat stuff....even when I almost step on rattlesnakes, like last year!

Love seeing the cactus pop out of the rocks. Maybe Clint Eastwood is hiding in there? :-)

Beautiful shot of a very cool landscape (and taken a good day too, my birthday!)

Great composition and lighting. I need my Arizona fix- it's gloomy and rainy here today.

I hope we get to do an Arizona trip next Spring.

We visited Sabino Canyon a year ago. I fell in love with the place, especially the majestic and spirital saguaros.

I was also floored with the many varieties of birds we spied.

Amazing!

I ran across this old newspaper article that I think may be about that cave -

http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn94052989/1893-06-25/ed-1/seq-11.pdf

It's from 1893 and it talks of a prospector living in a natural house. The article itself is in the lower right-hand corner of the page. I know you wrote this several years ago and above you've indicated that you no longer live there, but I'm sure you can pass this on to others, as well.

Good luck in New England!
